What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a motivational speaker, writer, and coach who helps business leaders and groups perform at a higher level. My clients include corporations, associations, small businesses, and many franchise brands.

Tell us about yourself

A successful bout with cancer in my 20s got me started as a motivational speaker. My messages evolved over the years into peak performance, culture/team-building, and leadership. After many years of presenting, it bothered me that I didn't have more practical, real-world experience applying the concepts I was speaking about on stage. So I decided to buy an Edible Arrangements franchise. My goal was not only for this business to be an additional stream of income but also a laboratory to learn what actually works in business. We made a lot of mistakes, but over time, we learned a lot. Eventually, we became the number one location in California out of more than 100 stores. Then we won the "Best Customer Service" and "Manager of the Year" awards, which led to an invitation to speak to my fellow owners at the Edible Arrangements convention about what they can do to create high-performing teams. After several years of running that first store, we acquired a second struggling location and made it profitable within a year. Soon I started getting invitations to speak at franchise conferences for other brands. I've since sold my stores and focus now full-time on speaking and coaching business owners.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Getting my book published by Entrepreneur was huge for me and continues to open a lot of doors. It's a pretty great feeling to hear from people how much they appreciate the message. Ego-wise, I've given a paid presentation in all 50-states. I'm a humble guy, but that's a pretty cool thing to brag about when asked!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The uncertainty, especially because so much of what I do is "gig work," such as one-time keynotes. I'm starting to do more long-term products, coaching, and consulting and am busier than I've ever been, but there were a lot of years when things got quiet, and I got scared. You never know what disruptions lie around the corner.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Always be marketing and selling.
  2. Don't stop getting better at what you do and providing increased value to those who pay you.
  3. Get yourself over your head, then quickly figure out how to deliver.
