Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jami Boys, an Author & Founder of An Oregon Cottage, located in Eugene, OR, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

An Oregon Cottage is a food & garden website dedicated to helping women live a simple homemade life through whole food recipes and easy organic gardening, finding the joy in everyday life and its imperfections.

Tell us about yourself

After teaching myself the cooking and gardening skills I needed to feed myself and my family wholesome food, I started the website in 2009 with the hope of helping others to do the same with a little less trial and error. I love connecting with people through the site and YouTube channel and seeing their success with the easy tips and techniques I've shared with them.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being able to quit my teaching job in 2013 and go full-time on the website.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Keeping up with all the changes and things to do as a website (maintenance as well as social media, creating products, keeping up with financials, etc.) as well as finding quality people to help with them.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Decide on a topic you're really passionate about - you will be writing and talking about it over and over for years to come if you're successful!
  2. Invest in a basic how-to course, but just one, and follow it in real-time. There will always be time later to look at other educational courses.
  3. Keep the ROI (return on investment) at the top of all your purchases - will it move the dial further in your business or just keep you spinning? Invest in only what you can afford at the time and what will give you the best return.
