What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own a marketing consulting business with a focus on content marketing. I mainly work with local businesses but take on projects from national companies periodically. I often focus on the financial services industry.

Tell us about yourself

Honestly, becoming a single mom over a dozen years ago prompted me to start working freelance to help pay the bills. Since then, as my experience and clientele grew, I created AN Consulting, which enabled me to reach a broader audience.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Still being around after 12 years! It wasn't always easy, but I've persevered.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For me, it has to hustle to find new clients and projects. It's become easier as my network has grown over the years.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure it's something you love to do and can picture doing for a decade or two!
  2. Have a clear understanding of what your key differentiators are and who your audience is before you start.
  3. Don't underestimate the power of social media, especially LinkedIn. Nowadays, it's the main tool to communicate what you have to offer and to network with current and potential clients/customers.
