Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amy Twombly, Founder of Hello Baby Adoption Consultants, located in Glastonbury, CT, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Hello, Baby helps hopeful adoptive families navigate the domestic infant adoption process. We work with families nationwide who would like to adopt a baby through the domestic infant adoption process.

Tell us about yourself

After my daughter's adoption, I became passionate about supporting and promoting domestic infant adoption. Friends and others would ask me for advice and if I could help them. Within a year or so, I helped three families through the process. I also stayed in contact with our adoption social worker (and now business partner Caitlin), and we always talked about how we could help families through this complicated and emotional process. It took us a while to get the confidence to start an actual business, but once we did, we were all in and we haven’t looked back. Not hadn’t. We actually started the business without ever meeting in person. She is in TX, and I am in CT.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think it all feels like a big accomplishment. I have a degree in education but was a stay-at-home mom for 17 years. Never did I think I would own a business, let alone a successful one, and certainly not in the adoption world. My biggest accomplishment, however, is helping to create so many families and helping people become parents. It is simply amazing!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The responsibility of it all and the fact it is my name and my reputation. I feel directly responsible for each family that works with Hello Baby and making sure that they are successful. Most families that we work with are desperate to be parents, and many have gone through years of infertility, loss & grief. I don't take that lightly.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just start it! My #1 saying is, "if you don't try, it certainly won't happen." If you fail, it's ok! Learn from your mistakes.
  2. Make sure you have a very good social media person. This is where it is all at in today's world.
  3. Spend the money and create a good (fantastic) website and make sure it is user-friendly and that it is fresh, clean, and current looking.
