Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amy Hager, Content Creator of Colorado Mountain Living, located in Black Hawk, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Colorado Mountain Living is a brand encompassing our YouTube Channel and my art business. Customers are followers of our channel, brand sponsorships, and people who enjoy art & jewelry made from mixed media collages from dried Colorado botanicals.

Tell us about yourself

I decided to go self-employed about eight years ago from a desire to be more independent and have more time for the activities I enjoy. Because I know I’m in control of my business and income motivates me to work hard and think outside the box. I also enjoy what I do, so that makes a huge difference in staying motivated.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The biggest accomplishment is creating a passive stream of income in addition to selling a physical product and providing direct services. When business is slow, passive income is always there and comes in very handy.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I manage three businesses and currently building a 4th. It can be a lot to manage when one gets very busy. It can be hard to take a day off as there is always work, that needs to be done.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get a mentor. It’s very hard to make a go of self-employment by yourself.
  2. Have a backup income. You’ll have much less stress if all of your money is not dependent on your single business idea. If that means starting a business while working part-time, that’s ok.
  3. Keep making progress. It can feel like you are stuck, but even taking bandy steps every day will eventually bring you to your goal.
