Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amy Shults, owner of AMS Nutrition Counseling PLLC., located in Lockport, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am the owner of a private nutrition practice, AMS Nutrition Counseling PLLC. I help people get to their healthiest selves through one-on-one nutrition counseling. I support patients through their struggles with diabetes, prediabetes, weight management, polycystic ovary syndrome, and other chronic health conditions.

Tell us about yourself

I became a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and worked in the field for several years before additionally becoming a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist. The job market in my area at that time didn’t have many opportunities that fit my knowledge and skillset, so I decided to pave my own way.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I’ve always taken a lot of pride in the fact that I help people improve their lives while utilizing their health insurance benefits. Navigating the world of insurance payments can be a lot at times, but most of my patients are seeing me at no cost to them, so it really benefits them. I love that I get to remove this financial barrier.

More recently, though, I have navigated the new world of going from solopreneur to an employer by hiring a part-time assistant. This has felt like a huge step as a business owner, and I look forward to what the future holds.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

When you’re a business owner, no one is telling you what to do. It can be hard at times to know if you’re doing all the right things as no one is giving you a checklist to follow.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find support. Join groups and create your own community of like-minded colleagues that you can talk to. Ask questions and take the time to answer theirs, as this can help you grow and learn as well.
  2. Know when to DIY certain things and when to hire out and get expert help. There’s a fine balance, especially in the beginning, but over time the number of things you do yourself should decrease.
  3. Set boundaries and stick to them. Owning a business is supposed to give you more freedom, not less.
