Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jamie Smith, Co-Founder of Amplify Advisors, located in Calgary, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Amplify helps growing businesses with their financial strategy. We help them scale with profit. We are business accountants and growth consultants. We provide Finance Leader services, including Fractional CFO, Fractional Controller, Financial Leadership & Accounting Services. We also have Recruiting Services and place CPAs in permanent and temporary positions. AmplifyTech is an Oracle NetSuite Solutions Provider, and we license, implement, consult & support Cloud ERP.

Tell us about yourself

Our purpose is to enhance communities, amplify opportunities and cultivate connections. We started to Amplify because small & medium businesses are employer businesses and the country's economic backbone. Yet, there were very few business accountants and growth consultants supporting the financial strategy of these vital community members.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The growth of our clients and the building of an epic team humbles us daily. Our greatest accomplishment is matching professionals with our clients' cultures and providing Client Experience through living our values of courage, connection, candor, curiosity, and collaboration. We've seen employer businesses scale with profit because they invested in their financial strategy through us.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Designing a job and life you are passionate about and letting you live your purpose is an opportunity. However, it never gets easy because you always try to improve and grow. Our North Star is Client Experience foundational to that is Employee Experience. Building processes, automation, and a support team that give our employees the best possible experience and let them focus on Client Experience is a never-ending journey. There are no chances to get complacent.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Sales - Being a business owner means you are in sales. Do you know how to sell? Do you love it? The first thing I always ask aspiring entrepreneurs is their experience and interest in sales.
  2. MVP - Perfectionism is the enemy. You must be comfortable learning while serving/selling and earning income off a minimum viable product. The second point I like to raise is the need to get momentum and be comfortable learning while in business with real customers.
  3. Revenue Models - Get creative on how you price and collect cash. Diversity in contract terms, collection, commitment, and general revenue sets you up for better value, cash management, and risk mitigation. The third area I would like new business owners to consider is how they will design earning revenue.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Profitable growth relies on the right systems, processes, and people to scale the business and support the team. The inability to achieve goals threatens business owners' reputations and their companies' futures. Entrepreneurs work too hard to watch their business plateau from chaos. They deserve the support to restore leadership and prepare the business for growth.
