What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is professional speaking and executive coaching in the leadership area. My customers are organizations of all sizes and in different industries and top executive leaders.
Tell us about yourself
My day job is as a professor of healthcare administration at Trinity University. I started coaching and speaking in order to become a better teacher to my students in the classroom. I enjoy speaking to large audiences and inspiring them towards leadership excellence. I also get a lot of rewards from working 1:1 with an executive and seeing them overcome their limitations and capitalize on their strengths.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Launching my business on my own while still holding a full-time job and balancing family responsibilities. I have spoken at hundreds of organizations, coached dozens of leaders, and published three books.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Managing the calendar: what to say yes to, how to be selective, and deciding what rates to charge that are compatible with my expertise.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
You don't always have to quit your day job; make sure your costs are as low as possible (don't hire a VA unless you have to), and invest in yourself.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
It is always better to find areas that are symbiotic and feed each other. In my case, it is teaching writing, speaking, and coaching.
