Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Maria Flynn, CEO of Ambiologix, located in Kansas City, MO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Starting, owning, and operating a business can be lonely and challenging. We wanted to create an opportunity for business owners to get the guidance, tools, education, and personable help they need to succeed at any stage of their entrepreneurial journey. Not only do we help provide networking opportunities, mentors, and strategic assistance, but we also want to see entrepreneurs grow both personally and professionally.

As entrepreneurs ourselves, we understand the challenges and obstacles of growing a business. We want to be the outlet and resource you need from start to finish. We believe in sharing the lessons we’ve learned and bringing back the joys of creating a successful business and all the personal and professional development that comes with it.

The word Ambiologix means around logic and is based on infusing logic into our decisions. Ambiologix is the place to lay out all your thoughts and questions and to get reinforcement and access to curated resources. We provide coaching and consulting to entrepreneurs across industries, from startups to large corporations.

While we personalize our services to what the entrepreneur needs, one of the most common ways we work with entrepreneurs is in 90-day sprints to climb the mountain in their immediate view. When they have summited that mountain, they pick another mountain to climb.

Tell us about yourself

Entrepreneurship has its unique set of struggles. I started Ambiologix to help entrepreneurs with these challenges so they don’t feel alone. As an entrepreneur with over 20 years of experience and working with other entrepreneurs in over 25 companies, I found there is a common need to streamline what entrepreneurs need to get done to make progress towards their goals.

We help entrepreneurs structure their goals, achieve those goals, surpass obstacles, find answers, and connect with mentors, investors, and clients along the way. From start to scaling to selling a business, we are there every step to ensure the best results for our founders and their companies.

Our industry experience spans pharmaceutical technology, digital health, and engineering. We have worked with entrepreneurs from deep tech industries to consumer products, MedTech, GovTech, marketing, fintech, Web3, and music products.

As CEO of Orbis Biosciences, I built a technology company that improved pharmaceutical manufacturing, won awards for its novel innovation, and was acquired by Adare Pharmaceuticals. As Managing Director of Techstars Kansas City, I invested in and coached startups across health tech, biotech, fintech, deep tech, and consumer tech. I have been in the trenches with founders from over 25 companies and love being a business growth guide.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

It is exhilarating to get calls from one of my entrepreneurs who has completed an important sales deal, funding round, or a customer insight breakthrough. Those are big dopamine hits. I am also particularly proud of selling Orbis Biosciences to Adare Pharmaceuticals as one of the few female-led pharmaceutical technology companies.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Running a business can be lonely and challenging. Don’t let yourself be alone. Find a tribe of peers and mentors that will walk the journey with you.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Learn from others any chance you have.
  2. It’s ALL about momentum. Make the first step as easy as possible.
  3. Find ways to create urgency with yourself, your team, and your customers. It’s amazing how often people let “in just six months” slide, so they are in the same place years later.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Get really good at your self-pep talk and be intentional about what you feed your mind. Be selective of the people around you so they provide the right messages. If you ever run into trouble managing the internal and external voices, find us at ambiologix.com.
