Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Giancarlo Perez, CEO and Founder of Amaran Snacks, located in Miami, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We provide a line of healthy snacks on the go made of Amaranth, a superfood that is low in calories and high in protein. Amaranth has myriad health benefits that include lowering cholesterol, is a good source of Vitamin C which aids the immune system, and prevents hair loss, among other things.

Our customers are those who believe that taking care of your body should be a priority. Our customers are those who are on the go but understand that lack of time does not have to mean a lack of self-care. We are also aware that children and even dogs are equally enthused with our product.

Tell us about yourself

As a neurosurgeon during COVID, while being less active than normal, it was important for me to curb my cravings with something that would not significantly affect my caloric intake. I'm an anxious eater, and I found myself resorting to unhealthy habits just to curb my anxiety-driven cravings. I researched healthy alternatives and found out about Amaranth, a relatively unknown grain in the United States but a staple in the Mexican diet for centuries. After researching all its benefits and how it was most commonly consumed in Mexico, I decided to embark on producing and distributing these snacks in the United States.

My motivation is growing and pushing myself to grow more personally. I have always been a doctor; never did I imagine I would become an entrepreneur. Having the discipline I acquired from doing Neurosurgery affords me the chance to do this and be able to educate and help others. This is my major motivation.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being able to execute my ideas in a way that has been understood by others and liked.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

There is no time off. You are constantly working; thus, some things in your personal life do suffer. Another hard thing is overthinking; if you overthink, there are a thousand reasons why you shouldn't embark on any business. You have to learn to block the negatives.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

You have to have a well-executed idea you are passionate about, have discipline, and learn to ignore all the reasons why you should not embark on any business venture if your heart and soul are in it.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Just do it.
