Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in branding and marketing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amanda Warfield, Content Marketing Strategist, Speaker & Educator, located in Aiken, SC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a simplicity-focused content marketing strategist, and I help course creators craft marketing strategies that allow them to fit marketing into their business without it taking over their business.

Tell us about yourself

Initially, I wanted to start a business in order to have more freedom. I was teaching preschool and loved it, but a teacher's schedule is extremely inflexible. You get time off, but only as dictated by the school schedule. And my husband's schedule is always varied, which meant that our time off often didn't overlap. We wanted more time together, and I wanted more ability to decide my own schedule, which led me down the path of entrepreneurship. And now, I'm motivated by a love of what I do. The freedom and flexibility are absolutely incredible. But I've found such a love for working with clients and teaching my students about marketing that my motivation truly comes from a love of what I do.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Every day in business is a major accomplishment. All business owners know what I mean when I say that being a small business owner is not for the faint of heart. So every day that I get to wake up and do what I love, I consider an incredible accomplishment. But, if I had to pick just one specific thing, I'd have to go with the book I'm writing. The manuscript is currently written, and we're in the editing phase now, but be sure to give me a follow and stay tuned for the launch in July 2023!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Without a doubt, isolation and imposter syndrome are the hardest parts of being an entrepreneur. Until I began working by myself, I didn't realize just how life-giving it was to chat with my coworkers each day. When you're feeling isolated, imposter syndrome can really sneak in and steal from your confidence. Plus, not having others to bounce my ideas off of and work out the kinks has led to more than one misstep in the last five years of owning my business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Take control of the content creation hamster wheel before you can't get off. Keep your marketing plan simple.
  2. Embrace the messy. The first few years of entrepreneurship have a steep learning curve. Instead of trying to learn everything and perfect every aspect of your business, just lean into the unknown and take things one baby step at a time.
  3. The top three things I wish I had done immediately: get my legal ducks in a row (LLC paperwork, business bank accounts, etc.), hire a professional brand designer, and immediately get professional brand photos. Those three things will give a firm foundation for the beginnings of your business.
