Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with LaToya Wider, Owner of Always Written, located in Chicago, IL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Always Written is a writing consulting agency that specializes in writing, editing, and proofreading various documents and web content, including résumés, cover letters, custom documents, and more. We say what you want to say in a graceful, professional way. My customers are busy professionals and entrepreneurs who need someone to handle the details of writing and/or editing their documents and web content.

Tell us about yourself

Since I can remember, I’ve loved to journal, take notes, and just write. It helps me to remember what is being said but also helps me to process situations and emotions. There is something about pen and paper that solidifies memories. It solidifies thought, and ultimately, for me, it solidifies my legacy. I’ve also been a huge stickler for correct spelling and grammar. There are many people who are great oral communicators but lack written communication. That’s where I come in, helping people by doing what I love each day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is showing up every day and discovering new ways to grow my business. Often as entrepreneurs, we believe when we start a business, that’s all we’ll need. But I’ve come to find that as industries, people, and needs change; we need to pivot as well to better service our clients.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is being the entire team. I am still building my business which means my responsibilities include writing, customer service, marketing, sales, and more. Although challenging, the stamina and knowledge I’m gaining are priceless.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don’t overthink it. There is something you can offer to the world that no one else can. Monetize it and be a blessing to those in need. It doesn’t need to be perfect to be successful.
  2. Stay focused. Life has a way of pulling us in different directions at times. Limit distractions and commit to the goals you’ve set for yourself and your business.
  3. Have fun! The beauty of starting and running a business is the ability to get paid to do what you love. Enjoy it! Stay open to learning new things and applying them to your business. Your growth will be endless.
