Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Samantha Dong, Founder of ALLY Shoes, located in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Ally Shoes is an innovative fashion brand designed for women by women - creating power heels and dress shoes minus the pain. With a patent-pending design and inclusive sizing options, our mission is to be an ally in fashion for all women. We re-engineered the statement heel with a podiatric surgeon to create a flexible structure that secures your foot and looks fabulous. Each shoe is designed to stretch with lightweight cushioning built into the soles to relieve all pressure points; available in inclusive sizes (US 4-12) and four widths (narrow, medium, wide, and extra wide).

Our customers are women who are looking for stylish, comfortable, and inclusive footwear options. Whether they are working professionals, busy moms, or fashion-conscious individuals, we aim to meet the needs of all women who prioritize both comfort and style. Our shoes are designed to fit a variety of foot types and sizes, so women of all shapes and sizes can find the perfect fit for them. We are dedicated to empowering women and helping them feel confident, comfortable, and stylish every step of the way.

Tell us about yourself

A former management consultant, I always wore heels to work. Then I hurt my feet hiking and couldn't wear heels without pain. That's when it clicked - heels shouldn't hurt in the first place. I saw a need for women to have footwear options that wouldn't sacrifice style for comfort or vice versa. ALLY Shoes' founding leadership team includes Podiatric Surgeon Dr. Roxann Clarke and acclaimed shoe designer Sarah Jaramillo. Our diverse backgrounds and varying professional experiences inspired the overall concept of our unique pain-free heels and shoe design. We each bring our expertise to the table, and together, we created a heel that can be a woman's ally.

Each day, I am motivated by the positive impact that ALLY Shoes is having on women's lives. Hearing from our customers about how our shoes have changed their lives for the better is what keeps me and my team going. I am also driven by the creative process of designing and creating new styles and the opportunity to be a part of a larger movement that empowers women. I am proud to be leading a mission-driven brand that represents the qualities of a modern, strong, and beautiful woman.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being recognized by Forbes on their Next1000 List is certainly a significant accomplishment for me as a business owner. It not only validates the hard work and dedication I have put into my business, but it also highlights the impact that my business has made in the industry. It's a testament to the success of our company, our team, and the innovative products and services we offer to our customers. I am incredibly proud of this recognition, and it motivates me to continue pushing the boundaries and reaching new heights in my business journey."

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner is balancing the various responsibilities and making tough decisions. From managing finances and making strategic decisions to leading and inspiring a team, there is a lot on a business owner's plate. Additionally, there are also external challenges such as changes in the market, economic downturns, and navigating through uncertain times like the COVID-19 pandemic. Staying agile and finding creative solutions while maintaining the core values of the business can be a challenge, but it's also what makes being a business owner both rewarding and fulfilling.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Listening to your customers is one of the most important things you can do as a business owner. Your customers are the people who are actually using your product or service, and they can provide valuable insights into what is working well and what needs improvement. By paying attention to their feedback, you can continually iterate on your offerings to better meet their needs and exceed their expectations.
  2. Be flexible and adaptable. The business landscape is constantly changing, and you need to be able to adjust your strategy and approach as needed. Being flexible and open to change will help you stay ahead of the curve and respond quickly to shifts in the market.
  3. Have a solid support system of friends, family, and mentors who believe in you and what you're doing. Surround yourself with people who have the experience and skills you lack and are willing to help you when you need it. Building a strong support system can help you weather tough times and stay motivated as you grow your business.
