Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Logan Anderson, Owner of All Strong Fitness LLC, located in Bettendorf, IA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own an inclusive fitness and health company called All Strong Fitness LLC. Through my work, I try to help underserved populations through health and fitness. This involves teaching health education, exercise instruction, and coaching through lifestyle with individuals of all abilities. I have worked with a large number of individuals, including seniors, individuals with intellectual disabilities, Special Olympics athletes, and even at-risk youth. There are many ways to help underserved populations in the world; fitness and health is one of them we try to employ.

Tell us about yourself

Through college, I started working as a caregiver for individuals with special needs in their homes. This involved cooking, cleaning, bathing, and assisting the participants with achieving independent and fulfilling lives. During this time, I also worked as a fitness coordinator in a senior living community, providing one on one workouts, group classes, and lifestyle counseling for the residents in the community. I left both positions but realized I enjoyed working with these populations. Combined with my knowledge from the degree I received in exercise science and a connection to these populations, that's when I decided to start All Strong Fitness.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Honestly, nothing particularly brings me a sense of "accomplishment" regarding my business. There have been a lot of "neat" opportunities and accomplishments, such as assisting at the Special Olympics USA Games in teaching health education and getting paid a large amount of money to teach a class to at-risk youth about personal training out of town. My biggest accomplishment is getting out of my comfort zone to do these things. Looking back and saying, "I made that connection, which led to that event," or "I have built myself enough knowledge and confidence to make money myself," is where I find accomplishment.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Doubting every single decision of every single day. "Will this put me forward or set me back?" "Am I doing enough?" "Is this a waste of time?" These things constantly nag at me when I am completing tasks inside and outside of my business. What gets me through these times is having a good support system, like my family, and reminding myself that EVERYONE who has been successful in life keeps moving forward, despite these doubts.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be honest with what you truly want for the business. Not what your family wants or what society thinks is right, but what you truly want to accomplish.
  2. Have a support system, and surround yourself with positive thinkers and people. The fastest way to kill your dreams and business is to have energy suckers that kill your drive and motivation to think big.
  3. When making decisions, nudge into the fear. If there is fear with a decision, it is probably a good place to analyze and see why it brings you to fear. Once you do this, address if the fear is rational or irrational. Many fears are made up or based on how we "think" something should be. These are all narratives that can be rewritten with a different mindset.
