Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in leadership development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Joe Contrera, President and Founder of ALIVE @ WORK LLC, located in Prescott, AZ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

In one sentence...I help extraordinary leaders achieve extraordinary results. How do I do this? I hold up a mirror for them to see themselves so they can get out of their own way!

Tell us about yourself

For years, I have wanted to be a motivational speaker. One day after being in the corporate world for 17 years, I just jumped! I quit a great job making great money with cars and bonuses and started my business on April 1, 2000. I figured if it didn't work out, I could say I was just fooling. The thing that motivates me is one of the biggest accomplishments I listed in the next question.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think the greatest accomplishment has been the evolution of my business over the last 23 years, authoring four books; more importantly, knowing that I am living my purpose and helping others to change their lives motivates me every day!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I think the hardest thing about being a business owner is balancing 'working on the business' (websites, finding new clients, writing, etc.) and 'working in the business' (the actual work with my clients). It is a constant readjustment. That, and believing in yourself, especially through the tough times!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be crystal clear about "why" you want to start your own business. It's important to align your business with your purpose, which usually has something to do with serving others.
  2. Don't listen to the naysayers and all the friends and family members who tell you you're crazy, nuts, or not thinking right. They may just be projecting their own fear onto you! Surround yourself with people who believe in you, and never look back!
  3. Never, ever, ever forget that regardless of what product or service you provide, remember it is always about providing value to your customer! Value can be seen as saving time and money, reducing stress, improving productivity, basically anything that reduces their pain points!
