Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alison Grass, founder of Be at Peace Coaching, located in Rockville, MD, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Trauma-Informed Spiritual Coach, and I run a virtual coaching business - Be at Peace Coaching - that helps women who are on a quest for inner peace and abundance achieve just that!

Most people are chronically stressed (even if they are unaware of it), operating in fight or flight and leaning into our hustle mentality culture's motto of "no rest for the weary." On top of that, most everyone has experienced trauma in some capacity. Without the proper tools, chronic stress and trauma can affect everything: our peace, our emotional reactivity, our mindset, health — and even what we attract into our lives.

Luckily, this isn't the endgame. You can make breakthroughs! You can live peacefully and abundantly. You just need to learn HOW, and be willing to do something new.

And that's exactly what I do. I am the "how." I help overwhelmed women transform their lives. I help women who are ready to thrive in life to move past healing, mindset and/or manifestation plateaus so that they can live low stress, high vibe, peacefully and abundantly. I do this through a mixture of modalities, including spiritual life and life coaching, breathwork coaching, yoga, somatics, mindfulness, manifestation, and more!

My coaching helps women to calm their nervous systems, build emotional resiliency, get "unstuck," and find energetic alignment - so that they can thrive in life. When you shift your internal reality, you shift your external reality and attract more peace and abundance.

Tell us about yourself

Two primary things were a catalyst for me getting into this line of work. I was inspired to become a Trauma-Informed Spiritual Coach after my own chronic stress played a factor in my developing chronic fatigue and worsening some health conditions. Regulating my nervous system through meditation and breathwork helped me to jump timelines in my healing, and I knew that after I experienced significant improvements in my energy levels, mood, and emotional reactivity, that I had to share and teach this gift with others.

The second part might be a bit more woo for some, haha, but I went through an ego-death style spiritual awakening that made me realize I wasn't living in my purpose. Together, these two things led me down the crazy path of entrepreneurship, and I will never look back.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

In many ways, I think being a business owner is an accomplishment in and of itself. It takes emotional resiliency and guts to step away from the certainty of a 9-5 income, then create your own certainty. And, of course, every time a client of mine makes a breakthrough, my heart dances. I have helped women get off of/reduce the amount of anxiety medication they take, reduce their emotional reactivity, improve their health, and manifest overflow and abundance into their lives and businesses. It's gratifying, and I am grateful that this is my purpose.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest part is probably that entrepreneurship is a lot of unknowns. I truly believe that entrepreneurs (whether a coach, real estate agents, investors, etc.) can have some of the most stressful jobs because, as entrepreneurs, we grapple with uncertainty all the time. It's the nature of our work. You may not know where your next client is coming from, how your cash flow will be each month, or if your new marketing strategies or launch protocols are effective.

We are personally responsible (and liable) for any decision we make. This can feel like a lot of pressure if you aren't emotionally resilient and don't know how to operate from a state of emotional equilibrium.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Hire a business coach or other professional that can help you learn the nuts and bolts of running a business in your field. You will spend 10x longer trying to figure it out on your own.
  2. Invest in and prioritize your emotional wellbeing. Make sure your nervous system is regulated and prioritize your mental health. For one, our businesses are going to reflect our emotional and mental state back to use – so operating from a place of emotional equilibrium will help you to be more successful. But also, I see so many entrepreneurs burn themselves out with a hustle mentality culture, and that's usually driven by a fear that they will not be successful (or don't deserve success) unless they are burning themselves out.
  3. Have fun! You created your business because you're a visionary, because you have a passion, and because it's your life calling. When you stop having fun, you've forgotten why you decided to pursue entrepreneurship in the first place.
