Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alina Mueller, a psychologist and psychodynamic psychotherapist based in Germany.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm Alina, a German psychologist and psychodynamic psychotherapist in training. I help people understand the psychodynamic theory - and themselves. I believe self-knowledge is freedom, and studying psychodynamics has been a powerful way to learn more about myself. Why, then, should knowledge that is interesting be confined to jargon-heavy books or a therapist's consultation room?
Tell us about yourself
I started my YouTube channel, "Perennial Psychology," in the summer of 2020. I was looking for a creative outlet and found a wonderful way to connect with other like-minded people who share the same interest. I've been reading about psychodynamic theory for years. Being a native German speaker gives me the advantage of diving into the original works of Freud or Adler, plus I'm still enough of a beginner to know what it feels like to understand, like, nothing, nada, nichts.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment has been to make psychodynamic theory accessible to others. I've gotten so many wonderful messages from students who use my videos to study for their exams or teacher who use my material in class. Plus, if gotten many messages on how the theories I introduce people to and the books I've shared helped more people understand themselves and get unstuck.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Taxes. Why is this so complicated? So many other things, of course like finding the courage to put yourself out there, "what will others think?", "but I'm not an expert...". But, yeah, taxes.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Just do it.
- Keep your day job!
- Don't do illegal things, and you'll be fine.
