Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alicia Wiley, owner of Alicia Wiley Photography, located in Baltimore, MD, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a Wedding + Portrait Photographer in Baltimore, Maryland. I'm inspired by connecting with people, and I am motivated by "the aesthetic," which has led me to a love of creating styled sets at my studio for mini sessions. I describe my job as visual storytelling. To me, photo galleries are art representing a full body of work. My clients are people who love to print their photos to display in their homes.

Tell us about yourself

As cliche as it sounds, I have always had a camera, I used to take my cameras everywhere, and I loved the thrill of getting the film developed. In Spring 2013, I was photographing people I knew as practice for a photography class, and by Fall, I had photographed my first wedding. By 2014 I had fallen in love with big weddings and family portraits. I tried other niches over the years, but creatively, I am entirely inspired by weddings and family portraits.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I used to think my biggest accomplishment was getting my work published, but now I am entirely fulfilled by giving my clients a great experience. Their experience of feeling good + looking good in their photos makes me feel accomplished.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Setting boundaries. Your clients/customers/team should not have and do not need access to you 24/7. Sticking to a set schedule for both work and communication is essential.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Invest in a CRM. Create automation for your most repetitive tasks.
  2. Set a schedule. Set Boundaries.
  3. Health is wealth. Running a business can run you down mentally, physically, and emotionally. Focus on your overall wellness.
