Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alexis Haselberger, Owner of Alexis Haselberger Coaching and Consulting, Inc., located in San Francisco, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is a time management and productivity coaching and consulting firm. At its core, my business helps busy professionals to do more and stress less through coaching, workshops, and online courses.

My customers are people with big jobs, big lives, or both, who are sick of being constantly overwhelmed and want to maintain their success with less effort and a lot less stress. My pragmatic yet fun approach helps people easily integrate practical, realistic strategies into their lives so that they can do more of what they want and less of what they don't. I've taught over 100,000 people to take control of their time, and my clients include Google, Lyft, Workday, Capital One, Upwork, and more.

Tell us about yourself

I spent the first 15+ years of my career managing operations and HR at several early-stage start-ups, where there was way more to do than people to do it. Burnout was rampant. While working in these high-stress environments (and having a couple of kids along the way), I started developing and implementing strategies for productivity at work and in my personal life to ensure that goals were met, balls were not dropped, and that most importantly, I, and those around me, stayed sane.

People I worked with saw these skills and started coming to me for advice and support. And eventually, I realized that I could make a bigger impact and reach more people if I started a business around these skill sets. I am thrilled to be able to wake up every day knowing that I'm going to be able to improve the quality of other people's lives.

Do you have daily rituals for work / wellness / fitness / mindfulness?

I end the workday by making a realistic plan for the next day; this helps to ensure that I'm ready to execute the next morning and that I'm not thinking about work in the evenings.

I use exercise to transition from work mode to home mode. At the end of my workday, I go for a run, usually in the park near my house. This helps me clear my head, be ready to cook dinner and be present with my family in the evening.

I end every day by writing in a "one line a day" journal, which helps me to think about the positives from the day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment has been reaching a point where I needed to scale my services beyond 1:1 coaching to meet the demand. Over the last year, I've not only transformed my results-getting 1:1 coaching program into a robust online group program, serving the needs of many more individuals, but I've also reached the milestone of having taught 100,000 students through my online courses.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For me, the hardest part of owning a business was learning how to put myself out there. As an introvert, it doesn't come naturally to be able to talk about myself, my business, etc. However, if no one knows what you're doing, you're not going to be successful. Putting yourself repeatedly in uncomfortable situations allows you to grow.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Deeply understand the problem you are solving and who has that problem. No one wants a solution for a problem that doesn't exist.
  2. Automate, systematize, and create processes from the beginning. Your business will be more sustainable this way, so you won't burn out.
  3. Get uncomfortable, put yourself out there, make mistakes, and stop judging yourself. The only way to improve is to experiment and iterate. Double down on what works, and toss what doesn't.
