What's your business, and who are your customers?
I have two! My clinical business is "Alexandra Todaro Diabetes & Nutrition Therapy, PLLC." My clients are people with diseases and a desire to improve their health. My healing business is "Ruthless Generosity, LLC." My clients are individuals seeking Reiki healing energy, Craniosacral Therapy, Aromatherapy, and organizations in need of a dynamic public speaker on topics including Health Promotion, Meditation, Plant-Based Diets & Energy Medicine.
Tell us about yourself
My interest in becoming a Registered Dietitian-Nutritionist was a result of losing my father to heart disease at a young age. Reading about Chinese medicine and global health practices has been my passion for decades. After numerous years in clinical settings, I started my own private practice, "Open Heart Healing," as a way to combine my clinical skills with my skills as a Healer practicing integrative medicine. Specifically, the modalities of Reiki, Craniosacral therapy, Energy Medicine, Aromatherapy, and Crystal & Sound healing are incorporated into my sessions.
I am motivated each morning by the words of Benjamin Franklin. I read that each day he arose and asked himself, "What good shall I do this day?" If I can motivate individuals to practice excellent self-care and nurture their Inner Peace, I am influencing the betterment of the world. By potentially decreasing physical and emotional suffering (byproducts of good health practices and meditation), I am being the change I wish to see in the world.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
A good question! Staying true to my heart and being dedicated to my own personal growth and education come to mind. I celebrated 10 years in private practice last month. Becoming confident as a healthcare provider can take years, but I have arrived! I added the credential of CDE, now Certified Diabetes Care & Education Specialist (CDCES), over 20 years ago, and that opened many doors for me. I learned about Reiki at an NYHQ presentation, and that led to my becoming a Reiki Master Teacher, the presenter became my teacher for all levels! I will celebrate my 5th anniversary in a few days as a Certified Meditation Instructor by the Open Heart Project. These achievements reflect my passion for continued education. At present, I am studying for an "Essential Oil Specialist" certificate. I pride myself on being a "healthy healthcare provider."
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
As someone with many skills and interests, finding my niche has taken years. A personal challenge can be having clear priorities and filtering out many tasks that can suck valuable time out of your day. In my clinical business, the admin side of the practice is the most difficult.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Go deep with your knowledge- if you are an expert in your field, it will show. Invest your time in staying up to date with current events in your field.
- Do not try to be all things to all people. As loveable as we are, not everyone will want to work with us. Identify your optimal clients and commit to them. You can always course-correct later.
- Schedule in "downtime," and do not give that time away!
