What's your business, and who are your customers?
I own an online bakery specializing in alcohol-infused cakes, cupcakes, and other desserts. My customers are adults looking for something special and unique to celebrate their life events. Traditional desserts with an adult twist.
Tell us about yourself
I am a lawyer turned boozy baker. I have always loved cooking and baking, but baking was my passion. I learned from my mother, who was self-taught. I always knew in the back of my mind that I would someday make it a full-time business. After practicing for over 20 years in 2014, I decided to stop practicing traditional law and make my passion a full-time business. What motivates me is the love for baking and creating and the peace it brings me.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment was landing a contract selling my baked goods at the Georgia Dome during Falcons home games and becoming the first and only baker to ever sell alcohol-infused products in a professional sports stadium.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The rollercoaster of trying to keep the business going and growing. Finding capital to help scale the business.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Do extensive research first before jumping in.
- Find a mentor in the field to help you navigate.
- Have another revenue stream besides the business. You can do both. Entrepreneurship is such a rollercoaster you should always have some consistent income coming in to offset the times when things may be slow in the business. This will also help you to make better business decisions because you will not make bad decisions based on financial stress.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Being a business owner is not easy and is not for anyone. If it is not your passion, it will be easy to give up. However, if it's something you love, do it because you love it, which will give you the strength to push through and not to give up.
