Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Al Renner, Owner of Alchemy Brewing Company, located in Kamloops, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a small 7BBL brewpub in Kamloops, BC. We enjoy providing local and tourism guests with great beer and food, as well as a fun atmosphere.

Tell us about yourself

I wanted to transition from out-of-town construction work to something that would allow me to become more of a part of my community. Despite the challenges of a very divided and toxic social media world, I am motivated every day by the real face-to-face connections and interactions that can happen over a great craft beer while playing one of our amazing pinball games.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is staying open through these challenging times. A pandemic, the great resignation, competing against corporate chain money, and all as a mom-and-pop shop where it's just myself and my wife.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest part of being a business owner is being spread very thin and trying to do too much by yourself.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Having partners can reduce your risk and share your workload.
  2. Do your demographic research. Some markets are just better than others.
  3. Have a great product and a staff that believes in that product.
