Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alan Berg, Founder of Wedding Business Solutions LLC., located in Kendall Park, NJ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I help wedding and event businesses sell more, profit more, and have more fun doing it. I'm a business consultant, sales trainer, and author.

Tell us about yourself

I fell into the wedding and event industry when my best friend bought a wedding magazine franchise and wanted me to come and sell ads for him. That led to my wife and I publishing the two magazines for five years, and then I went to work for The Knot, the largest wedding media company (website and magazines), first as a Regional Sales Director, then Vice President of Sales, Sales Operations and The Knot Market Intelligence. I was downsized 11 years ago and started my own business, speaking, consulting, and doing sales training. What motivates me is knowing that I'm having a real impact on not only people's businesses but also their lives.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I've spoken in 14 countries, in 3 languages, about the business of weddings and events. I'm one of only 39 Global Speaking Fellows in the world.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The uncertainty of future income. When I was a salaried employee, there was a security of a steady paycheck, but it was stifling because I couldn't control my income. Self-employed, I can work harder, come up with new ideas, and make more money. With a fixed salary, you can't do that.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. It's going to take more time than you think to get traction.
  2. It's going to take more money than you think.
  3. It's going to be more fulfilling than you can imagine!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

If you put your customers first, the money will come. Value your time, your ideas, and yourself.
