Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alain Helfrich, founder of Haunt of Hounds, located in South Bend, Indiana, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am the Executive Chef of Haunt of Hounds restaurant group. We currently have two running concepts (Fatbird & Propaganda Pizza) as well as three upcoming major projects. We seek to add unique and needed restaurants in the greater Michiana area.

Tell us about yourself

The beginning was unintentional; my grandfather was a chef. Growing up around him gave me a unique perspective of food, food culture, customer service, and the philosophy of hospitality. I grew into the business over time. The main motivator is to create restaurants that I want to eat at and improve South Bend as a whole.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being profitable during a global pandemic.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

People management, and the perishability of the product we sell.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be patient and caring.
  2. Become an expert in your business before you open your business. You'll still make mistakes, just fewer.
  3. Find your team. Without mine, I'd be nothing.
