Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Leigh Spencer, co-founder of Alabama Sawyer, located in Birmingham, AL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Alabama Sawyer mills urban timber and logs that have fallen within the city. Mills and dries the wood and transforms it into furniture for homes and businesses. We sell primarily to trade and interior designers but also directly to customers and businesses.

Tell us about yourself

I was trained as a graphic designer and went to art school. I started by making a logo for my husband's woodworking. Then a website. Then I learned QuickBooks. Then I started doing PR and project management. It's a slippery slope.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I am proud of winning Garden and Gun's Made in the South in 2017. I am also proud of the tiny things. I figure out how to do HTML.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Employees are hard. They become like family, but it's a business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

All the things other business owners say to you are true, but you probably have to experience it to then say, "Oh, now I get it!"
