What's your business, and who are your customers?
Script Reader Pro is a screenplay consultancy that helps aspiring screenwriters break into the film and TV industry. While there are tons of companies out there doing more or less the same thing, what sets us apart is that we're the only ones who hire professional working screenwriters. This means that writers who work with us are able to tap into our pros' first-hand knowledge and experience of what it takes to break into the industry.
Tell us about yourself
As an aspiring screenwriter myself, I was frustrated at the lack of quality feedback I was receiving on my scripts. (I remember one company spent about half a page talking about a punctuation quirk in the title.) I also didn't like the fact that every company seemed to hide their readers' identities. And so after receiving yet another coverage report back from an anonymous set of initials with "a great deal of experience reading scripts in the industry" or some similarly vague resume, I decided to set up my own company using professional screenwriters who people could work with one-on-one.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I hear from writers all the time that they've secured a manager or agent or won a contest etc., thanks to working with Script Reader Pro. This is exactly why I set the company up, and so my mission's been accomplished over and over, I guess, in that sense.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Juggling owning a business and all that entails with a family and my own creative pursuits.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- If starting a business is what you really want to do, make sacrifices in other areas until it's up and running.
- Look at your competition and make a pledge to outdo them in terms of what content you put out and what you offer your clients.
- Grow the business by focusing on the most essential things that will do just that, rather than, say, changing colors on the website.
