Tell us about yourself

I'm a delightful weirdo, a default optimist, and an elder millennial with an independent streak. I stumbled into digital marketing, discovered I was good at it, and it stuck. I've worked in every niche, from solar energy to dermatology to fintech to edtech. Between SaaS and Ecomm, webinars, and social media parties, I've tried it all. The last business I grew went from $150M to $500M in the five years that I ran a 75-person publishing department. I absolutely love mentoring passionate remote marketers and content creators. I love helping people, and doing it in a place like the Internet where trusted, clear information is needed, motivates me every day. Demystifying SEO and creating beautiful content is a dream job. It doesn't matter what I'm comparing or selling. If I can find a way to help someone, we can create demand for it.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Doing it! Trusting myself. It can be terrifying to put yourself out there and say, "I am good at this, and people need this service. Here I am, world." Just doing it in the first place is farther than many people get.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

It's too easy to chase sunk costs or do things because people say you should. Trusting your gut, making the right choices for you and your business based on your vision, and following through, are the hardest parts.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Focus on only three channels at a time. If you are trying to do more than that, you won't be able to do it well.
  2. Understand your processes. Actually, write them down and see how much each step costs and how much time it takes. Can any of them be rearranged or eliminated to achieve the same or better results?
  3. Let it go. Delegating takes practice and patience, and a mental shift toward coaching and instructing. Practice letting go of small things so you can focus on the big picture.
