What's your business, and who are your customers?
JanieMae’s Cosmic Garden is a place for people to celebrate their uniqueness. We are all born to stand out. The things that I handmade are meant to enhance your beauty. Just like the wearer, each piece is one of a kind. There is always an element of fun & regality in every piece. I never leave the house without JanieMae. You shouldn’t either.
Tell us about yourself
I have been creating since I was a kid. Drawing, writing, building, decorating, exploring… Imagination was and is my escape. My family encouraged my creativity. I spent much of my younger years with my grandma Mae (JanieMae). She was fascinating. She grew her fruits and vegetables. She made her own bread. She fished. She hung clothes on the line. Her flowers were always beautiful and vibrant. Lightning bugs visited her yard during the summer. She was always stylish.
When I revised creating a brand, all I could think about was her. She passed away when I was 13 years old. JanieMae’s Cosmic Garden is how I connect and hold court with her. She let me be me. I, in turn, let my creations be what they want to be. My desire to create and share is what keeps me going. The corporate world was tearing me apart. The creative world that I’m building keeps me together.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is owning a business. That’s huge to me. I’ve always wanted to be my own boss. I didn’t think it was possible for some reason. To be grinding at it daily is a dream come true & a confirmation that anything is possible.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Time management can be difficult for me. It’s easy for me to get wrapped up in earning and figuring out how am I going to pay the next bill? I need to make time to play.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Have faith & confidence in your abilities.
- Trust the process.
- Don’t compare your trajectory to anyone else.
