Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Robert MacEwen, Owner of Aikido School Of Self Defense, located in Middletown, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Martial arts school teaching the art of Nihon Goshin Aikido. Our students are of all ages, mostly adults.

Tell us about yourself

I started martial arts in the late 1960s. And began training in Aikido in 1974 and opened the dojo on September 24, 1980. When I was promoted to Black Belt in 1980, I was asked to leave the dojo I trained in and open my own school. Basically, you get thrown out.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Having tens of thousands of students sign up in over 43 years in business and promoting over 160 very talented, dedicated Black Belts.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Keeping the doors open and keeping the students focused.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Stay focused. Treat everyone the way you would want to be treated. Don't let anyone tell you you can't do it. Just do it, and it will grow.
