Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jason Swenk, Founder of Agency Mastery 360, located in Durango, CO, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We help agency owners turn their digital agency into an "asset" that creates predictability, wealth, and freedom. We help them scale their agency faster by showing them the right systems and framework.
Tell us about yourself
I never expected to become an agency owner, but it all started with Justin Timberlake. No, I don't know Justin, but one of my best friends looked just like him, so I decided to create a website for a fictional band called "NSHIT." To my surprise, the website went viral before that was even a thing, and people began asking me to design websites for them. I was designing everything from real estate to lawyer and marina sites. Before I knew it, in 1999, I had become an accidental agency owner. Fast forward a couple of years, we had a big team and big agency where we were working with clients like Aflac, AT&T, Lotus Cars, and Legal Zoom. The next thing I knew, people wanted to buy the agency, and I sold it in 2011. A couple of years later, some old competitors reached out to me about what worked for us and asked for my help. That is how I started helping agency owners grow, and my whole goal is to be a resource I wish I had when I was running my first agency.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
The biggest accomplishment would have to be helping over 20,000 agency owners set up the right systems, creating more freedom in their agency where they are only working on the things they love, and showing them how to create true wealth in their life.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Loneliness and isolation can be a big challenge for business owners. When you're starting and running a business, you often have to make tough decisions and deal with a lot of stress and uncertainty. It can be hard to find people who understand what you're going through and can offer support and guidance. That's why it's important to build a network of mentors, advisors, and fellow entrepreneurs who can provide perspective, feedback, and encouragement.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
As a business owner, you are getting pulled in all kinds of directions. You have so many opportunities and shiny red objects you want to chase. The first tip is to FOCUS, which means "Finish One Commitment Until Success." The second tip is to provide as much value as you can to a targeted audience. Create amazing free content that helps your target market out. Lastly, be patient and persistent. Building a successful business takes time and effort. Learn from your failures and use them as opportunities to grow and improve.
