Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lily Lawson, Owner of Afrocrush, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Afrocrush is a product-based business that offers products representative of Black Culture.

Tell us about yourself

As a young Black girl living in Canada, I felt separated from my roots... I knew that my parents' culture was rich and was being ignored in social arenas and suppressed in my city.

So out of the need to be represented and to highlight the beauty of African and Caribbean culture, Afrocrush was born. Whenever I see a child's eyes light up at seeing a black doll that looks like them, I feel fulfilled.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Surviving the COVID pandemic was an accomplishment I am proud of. We could use sales funnels to make our products available for purchase.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Finding the right help to do the job you need to be done.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. If you want to go fast, go alone, BUT if you want to go far, go as a team.
  2. Networking is where the magic happens.
  3. Listen to your customers. Their questions reveal a lot about what they're looking for.
