Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Polly Brennan, Founder of Adventurous Coaching, located in Northumberland, England.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am The Mental Fitness Coach, founder of Adventurous Coaching, and the creator of The Mental Fitness Kitbag™ Model. Drawing on years of expertise working in the NHS mental health sector, my coaching programmes empower people to strengthen their mental well-being and pack their mental fitness kitbag for life's big adventure.

Delivering a Mental Fitness Gym programme to primary school children, I teach young 'skyscrapers' skills to exercise their mental fitness muscles. Through my online Adventure Map™ coaching programme, I also empower proactive leaders and lifelong learners by offering the CPC (Continuing Personal Development) to ensure their mental fitness development becomes their big adventure.

Tell us about yourself

With 26 years of experience working in the NHS mental health sector as an occupational Therapist, I walked side by side with hundreds of people on their recovery journey. For 6 years, Polly developed Adventurous Coaching whilst developing rehabilitation mental health services. With a desire to take a pre-habilitative approach and help as many people as possible to pack their mental fitness kitbag, I help people from all walks of life take a proactive approach to nurture 'Mental Wealth.' My mission is to reach as many people as possible to overcome challenges and to enable them to have more, be more, and do more.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I am proud of my achievements, given that I am in my second year as a full-time entrepreneur. I developed and delivered the Mental Fitness Pop Up Gym Programme, a mental health programme over an academic year within Primary Education in the North East of England. I have also developed and launched the Adventure Map, an online coaching programme. I am currently working on my Self Help Book - Survival Guide to Mental Fitness.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Becoming a changemaker, taking action on my audacious goals, and taking big leaps with blind faith trusting that I can achieve your moonshot goals, both terrifies and excites me in equal measure.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Take Action: Expect to work hard. be prepared to take action every day to separate yourself from those who dream and those who win.
  2. Assemble your Team: Make connections with people who will encourage, support you and remind you to keep believing that you can achieve. Spending time with experienced entrepreneurs is vital.
  3. Choose the mindset that will strengthen your self-belief and help you grow a positive mental attitude to help you have more, be more, and do more!
