Tell us about yourself
In 2014 I began beta reading for author friends. They soon realized that I was a great source as an editor and encouraged me to open up a shop editing. But in 2016, I realized I needed more steady income than just the occasional editing job and began training as an author assistant.
In 2017 I opened up my business to all authors needing an assistant. My business has morphed a bit since then, and I mainly consult now. I love seeing authors accomplish their goals and really grow their businesses. Plus, my income is the one that pays for things like braces and extracurricular activities for my family.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
The best feeling in the world is seeing one of my authors reach the goal that we'd been working toward. Whether their goal is large or small, each reached goal is worth a party.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I love people. But I hadn't realized just how different being the company owner and boss was from just being a manager. Having employees has really stretched me.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- I'd suggest you begin with a solid plan. Before you take any steps to set up, do your research to know all of your options.
- Make sure you've got at least one person (preferably more) who has your back no matter what you'll need on the hard days.
- Set up as many automated processes as possible so that you can focus on what only you can do.
