Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in speech improvement but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tyler King, CEO of Adapt Your Accent, located in Sacramento, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Adapt Your Accent offers speech improvement programs for non-native English speakers that are designed to improve one’s confidence and clarity in speaking American English. While our programs do not erase accents, we do provide our clients with the necessary skills and tools to adapt their native accents in order to communicate more clearly in the American workplace.

Tell us about yourself

As a Speech-Language Pathologist, I have an immense passion for helping people communicate effectively. I previously worked primarily with adults recovering from strokes and brain injuries, rehabilitating their abilities to communicate with their family and friends. Now, with Adapt Your Accent, I have narrowed my focus to not only helping clients communicate better but within the parameters of improving their career opportunities as well as maximizing their potential professionally and personally.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My profession is naturally very gratifying, and so a sense of accomplishment is seen and felt daily. I often tell folks that I have the best job in the world. Every day I get the opportunity to help clients improve their level of communication effectiveness, which in turn leads them to larger, more robust professional roles, the ability to ascend in their organization’s leadership, in addition to lifelong skills to assist them in other endeavors.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things for me is separating personal time from work. Owning and running a business is not for the faint of heart, but certainly a rewarding one. I combat this difficulty by setting out clear objectives, timelines, and non-negotiable stopping times. How can I fill others’ cups when mine is empty?

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Find a small problem within your industry or interest, and do your homework to see how widespread it is. A business is no more than solving a problem for folks. Once you have your solution to the problem, run as fast as you can with your idea and see if it actually solves the problem. If it does, you know your idea is valid. Don’t forget to ask, meet, and talk with as many people in your network as you can about your idea - you never know who might want to help or point you in the right direction.
