Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Adam W. Barney, a Growth Coach based in Boston, MA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is "Adam W. Barney - Growth Coach," where I help my clients achieve their life and career goals through accountability and self-actualization and via my optimism, confidence, and experience. My clients are spread across various backgrounds - from entrepreneurs who need accountability and leadership guidance, leaders who need inspiration and accountability to help them succeed and grow in their current organization, to mid/late-career job-seekers looking to make a change in direction or level up their role. But really, instilling the confidence that growth is something anyone can unlock.

Tell us about yourself

Across the marketing leadership roles I held over the last two decades, I realized how much I valued coaching the teammates around me to grow and do more, be bigger, and be better. After looking inward at my own "belief box," I realized that focusing on helping others achieve growth through coaching was the practice I needed to build.

I am motivated daily to help lift my clients to achieve growth in life and career - helping guide them, celebrating their wins, and seeing their confidence grow—especially those who come from an underrepresented place that I can guide with my own experience.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I've built my coaching practice from nothing, and it is turning into a sustainable business where I get to see the wins my clients achieve through my help. There's nothing I love more than hearing my client's success stories!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Staying resilient through the ups and downs, continually reminding myself that I've already executed and achieved so much and that success will continue to grow over time.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Looking inward at what truly drives you. This will help ensure your business is genuine and authentic to yourself.
  2. Value the hard feedback you get. Don't let it discourage you; turn it around as a gift to iterate and learn!
  3. Work hard to network and learn from who you look up to in the space you are entering. The worst answer you'll get from anyone is "no," and that's not scary!
