Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Breannah Slaney, Founder of ACUlove NB, located in Moncton, NB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am an Acupuncturist with my own independent practice. Typically my clients are women. I help women navigate menstrual health, fertility, pregnancy, post-partum life, and auto-immune conditions.

Tell us about yourself

Working for myself has always been my goal, but I always thought it would be further down the line. During my maternity leave with my first son, I spent a lot of time using social media and going out in my community to educate about the services I would be offering once I finished my mat leave. I had finished school right before having my son, so I figured it would just keep my mind sharp. It became very clear quickly that people were ready for me to start practicing, and I opened my home to do treatments while my son slept. It rolled into a full schedule so quickly that I took the leap and got my own space to work for myself.

What motivates me each day is the difference I get to make for women. Feeling our best and learning about our incredible minds and body is so empowering. Watching women conquer their symptoms and reach their goals really fills my cup. Whether it’s helping women get past debilitating periods to excel at their work or regulate their bodies to get pregnant, it’s really beautiful to be part of.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I would say my biggest accomplishment to date is really changing how people see Acupuncture. I have taken something that very few people had experienced to it being a non-negotiable self-care item they do regularly. I hope to continue to show people that taking control of their physical and mental health is the key to living your happiest, most fulfilling life. Future plans for ACUlove involve creating a larger space that can expand my services and become a placeholder for empowering women in my community.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing that comes with being a business owner is self-doubt. Somedays, you feel like you are at the top of your professional and personal mountain, and then little things can shake your confidence. I think having good support to bring you down to earth and shift your perspective is so important.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Suppose you are looking to excel in business; you definitely need to get your WHY very clear. Figure out what pushes you and motivates you before you hit the hard days. There will be hard days, and you need a strong compass already available to you.
  2. The second tip would be to schedule your rest. It is very easy to go from pushing to achieving one goal and go right to the next. Pause in the middle and look at where you are, and appreciate the success. Rest and recover before you move to the next goal.
  3. The third tip would be to keep your community in mind. It looks different for everyone in each industry, but your goal should be to contribute to helping those around you in some way. It keeps you genuine and grounded, and it always comes back as good karma!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Make sure you enjoy where you are in life. It is corny, but you from 5 years ago would almost always be jealous of today! Be grateful for that!
