Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Gina Fontaine, founder of Active Living Lifestyles, located in Denver, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a SuperMom Mentor, Author, and Women's Health Advocate. I help moms who are overwhelmed by the demands of work and family life to find a healthy balance and regain energy and confidence. Using movement and mindfulness practices is the way I teach women to slow down and begin making choices that add value and energy to their lives. For over 30 years, I have been on the cutting edge of body/mind fitness.

My Supermom Club membership community provides moms with daily 10-minute movement breaks where we meet virtually. Most moms are so busy that they have very little time for exercise and self-care. That is why I chose to make these sessions short and sweet. As one member states, "It is like Gina hands us a torch in the morning that we carry throughout the day as a reminder that 'I matter."

Mom is the center of the family, and when she thrives, her family reflects that vitality. The Supermom Club is changing the world by inspiring moms to put themselves first to be even better care providers for their families.

Tell us about yourself

After burning out as a fitness manager while my 3 kids were in elementary school, I decided to start my own business. My first venture was to advocate for a healthy pregnancy. I created the Power of Pregnancy prenatal wellness program to support women to be healthy and vital throughout pregnancy. That program was adopted into the employee wellness programs at 2 school districts in Colorado, where I live.
Seeing many of my mom's peers struggle with maintaining their health, I decided to focus more on wellness for moms. I became a certified Postpartum Corrective Exercise Specialist in 2019, and I created a series called Mama Core Restore to help women regain confidence in their bodies and heal diastasis recti (separation of the abdominal muscles). I have helped dozens of women heal this condition and feel in control of their bodies again.

I have developed a system and fitness format to help women recover their sexy bodies and live a fully satisfying life. A life that includes taking care of family and treating yourself first. The framework of this method is outlined in the book I published in 2021, You Are a Supermom: 5 Ways to Reclaim Your Superpower and Thrive as a Mom.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Shortly after launching Power of Pregnancy, I filed for divorce. It was the most stressful time of my life as I tried to navigate being a single mom raising traumatized kids. I learned to compartmentalize my stress and keep going to keep my family afloat. I was beginning to reach 5 figures months just before the pandemic hit. That turned the fitness industry on its head as I then learned how to teach and conduct private sessions online. With a slower schedule, I wrote my book, and I am now launching a new aspect of my business as an inspirational speaker who mentors moms.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

There are so many ups and downs in business. There are times when money is flowing and times when the bucket is dry. Continuing to see the small steps of progress and support from other female entrepreneurs keeps me going each day.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Prioritize self-care. If you don't feel good, your business cannot thrive.
  2. Avoid comparing yourself to others. Recognize that you are on a unique path with your own timeline.
  3. See abundance in nature, community, and opportunity. Even when finances are scarce, there is always another place to find infinite possibilities.
