Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Chantale Bouchard, Founder  of Academy Miss Flower, located in Sorel-Tracy, Quebec, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I teach French and English lessons with fun and games. I work really well with beginners and people who have tried many times to learn a second language but don't seem to succeed or children that can't seem to have good grades in school. It's my specialty to find tricks to help you out and motivate you to want more.

Tell us about yourself

Born and raised in the province of Quebec, I spoke only French until I was 23. Never passed an English class in school, but my French was excellent. Having difficulties finding a job, I decided to add English speaking to my curriculum and moved to Alberta, where I lived for ten years. In all the jobs I had, I always ended up teaching something to someone and loved it. Eventually, I opened my school and called it Flower so people, especially children, would grow to love speaking other languages because it was fun and simple. From 4 students in the first year to 100 in the second, Flower continues to grow, and some students have been with me for five years because they love what they get with me. Going from beginners to intermediate and now advanced students, they are so proud of their progress that they don't want to stop. Most of them have become good friends over time. I love my job.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

To accompany children and adults from resentment to a content pleasure in learning a second language is an accomplishment I will cherish for my entire life. I might not be cited in history books, but I will have changed the lives of so many.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Creating a known name can be difficult at first. When I first started, I had Facebook only and a few friends encouraging me. Word of mouth is really magical, and that is how I managed to grow the most. Now that I am international, social media are really important, but the referrals are still a big part of my business, so I have a team that works with me to make sure I get Likes, Comments, and Shares, as well as opinions from various students and they, publish that on a regular basis.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Do you have your goal in mind? Where do you want to be in 1 year, three years, or five years? Now, do one action every day toward that goal. Small or big action, it doesn't matter as long as you are moving forward. Success might not happen overnight, but every year, you will be proud of what you have accomplished.
