What's your business, and who are your customers?
Abigail Grey Photo is a photography service for businesses, individuals, and editorial publications.
Tell us about yourself
I am a 27-year-old photographer based in Richmond, Virginia. My business was established in 2013 and has evolved from being a portrait and wedding business into both weddings, portraits, commercial and editorial work. I am motivated each and every day by my clients. Whether they're a couple preparing to get married, a family interested in seasonal portraits, a company with a vision to grow their visual brand, or a magazine with a story to tell, my clients all hold some of the most sacred stories I've ever heard, and I am incredibly honored to witness and narrate their stories through my photography.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment is building my business to where it is and reestablishing it in three different cities but continuing to grow. I know that sounds so general, but I am very proud of the lessons I've learned about business growth, marketing, and money management, and I see these as my biggest accomplishments.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Right now, for me, it's knowing what to prioritize and managing those priorities well. I think, in all, it's humbling to learn from the necessary mistakes you make along the way.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Find a mentor in your desired profession.
- Invest in the time to learn how to manage your money.
- Build your team either through network connections or through hiring out help!
