What's your business, and who are your customers?
Dustin's Place works with kids and adults with special needs in the community. We also offer western lessons and horse shows to typical kids.
Tell us about yourself
What first started me with horses was my grandparents at a very early age. They raced and raised harness horses. Then, when I was 20 years old, I had my first son, Dustin. He was born with Down Syndrome and helped me raise my first horse when he was a few years old.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment would be just raising this business from the ground up and raising my kids as a single mom, and doing what I love every day. It's fantastic to be part of my rider's lives, and none of them are just clients.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
My most challenging thing in running a business is being too personable. I run my life and my interaction with my heart, not my head. The results either bite hard, or they are significant benefits- there is no middle ground.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
My biggest tip is never to give up. If you want anything, go for it and never stop. The second would be that if you do not have a world of patience, this may not be the job you want to try out. The third would be that you have to love kids and families.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Dustin's Place offers therapeutic horseback riding for kids with special needs, competing in horse shows, state special Olympics, day camps, and sleepaway camps. We provide 4H goat showing, horseback riding lessons, and day camps for all typical children.
