Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Charron Smith, Owner of A Serious Production, located in Grass Valley, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

A Serious Production is a Mobile DJ Service and Podcast Production. Our customer range from wedding planners, organizers, and event stars (engaged couples, birthday people, or partygoers)

Tell us about yourself

I am a 16-year event DJ who played clubs, stages, studios, and weddings. I started my business in 2018 after the realization that I would not make enough money working a 9-5 job. So, I started doing friends' birthday parties and open mic shows. I then worked with firehouse entertainment in Woodland and got more working experience as a wedding DJ and MC. But, I was laid off when the pandemic hit, so I started doing weddings and events on my own.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I started working on corporate gigs like Apple and Sacramento Kings. It definitely changed my perception of my business to others.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

My business is a two-person operation. So, I have to handle several jobs beyond performing the event. This business makes me appreciate marketing, finance, operation, management, and inventory personnel a lot.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Marketing is your lifeblood. Get someone else to do it or get very good at it.
  2. Get a separate bank account. A business one is preferred. You need to separate your personal expenses and business expenses to grow.
  3. If you want to be legit and be eligible for loans and credit lines, you need a Tax ID number for your business. They are free, and you don't need to be an LLC to get one.
