Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in yoga but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Hollie Nesbitt, owner of Hello Sunshine Yoga, a kind, inclusive movement studio located in Cincinnati, OH, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Aerial Yoga, Yoga, and fitness. Our customers are everyday people that want to move their body in an encouraging and fun community.

Tell us about yourself

I have been teaching yoga since 2009. I love sharing the practice with others. I also teach barre and aerial yoga. I wanted a studio where people could practice all different kinds of movement without feeling like they had to have certain clothes or a certain look. I wanted to offer a place that is friendly and welcoming to all people. Our community is amazing. They inspire me every day. They lift each other up and treat each other with genuine kindness.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been staying open through COVID. I put all my yoga and fitness classes online through zoom and also did aerial yoga private classes through zoom. I constantly sent emails, texts and posted a ton on social media, trying to get people to stay motivated and stay on as customers. I also offered donation classes outside. It was a lot of work for me, but it paid off once we were able to go back inside the studio.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things for me is teaching a lot of classes and getting all the administrative things done.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure you are passionate about what you are doing.
  2. Budget twice as much as what you think you need.
  3. Continue to educate yourself. Take workshops, listen to podcasts, take classes, watch videos, etc.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Invest in people. Listen and support your staff. Ask your customers for feedback and be open to criticism. Be willing and open to learning and providing what your customers really want/need. Treat every single person that comes into your business with dignity, kindness, and respect.
