Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dua Aldasouqi, Founder of A Muslim Dietitian, located in Champaign, IL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

A Muslim Dietitian is a resource-based dietetics practice. Our goal is to elevate the dietetics profession in two ways: 1) providing education to other dietitians on how to serve their Muslim and other religious clients best and 2) directly educating the American Muslim audience so they can navigate their own health and nutrition.

Tell us about yourself

As a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist who's classically trained in the Islamic sciences, I am able to provide a unique perspective and expertise. I teach spiritual nutrition when working with my Muslim community. There is nothing more fulfilling than being able to combine two passions, being able to speak - in a professional setting - and incorporate my relationship with faith and God.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Pivoting into this niche, I've carved out for myself. Building a name for myself as a resource. And making 4 figures for an hour speaking engagement.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Recognizing how motivation, passion, income, and all other things ebb and flow. There's no constant in working for yourself.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Build that mailing list; it's the only thing you own.
  2. Identify your personal and business values. Sit with yourself and really see what you hold important, what boundaries you don't want to cross, and what your goals are. This will help make decision-making easier.
  3. Set aside a budget that you can part with (whether one lump sum or monthly) and use that to help you make decisions early on.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Social media is not a marketing tactic.
