Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Adriana Albritton, Founder of A Fit Wellness, located in Garden City Park, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I have a coaching business where I help people lose body fat, cultivate a robust internal environment, develop a healthier mindset, and live more fulfilling lives. I’m also helping develop a virtual health and wellness center to help individuals with medical conditions take control of their health.

The customers of my coaching business are busy pre-middle age and middle age people willing to make changes in their lifestyles to improve their fitness level, health, and mental wellness.

Tell us about yourself

I have a Master’s degree in Forensic Psychology and have been involved in the mental health field over the years. I specialized in forensic populations, treating perpetrators of crime. When I got laid off, I realized my minimal power over my professional life and finances. I realized how at any time, I could lose my job due to situations out of my control and end up in a negative financial predicament. Shortly after, I also broke my hip due to having a poor diet and over-training. I had to accept that I wasn’t in optimal health. Since I had witnessed the negative effects of an unbalanced mind on the body, I understood the importance of mental health. Then, I recognized the awful repercussions that an unbalanced body has on the psyche and life experiences. After having my son, I decided to get certifications in Personal Training & Fitness Nutrition. Consequently, I started coaching people privately, which allowed me to get the knowledge I needed to become healthier and the ability to take a direct role in my professional life and finances. Being an example for my son and providing a better future for him motivates me and is a catalyst for change in people’s lives.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Witnessing improvement and change is an ongoing accomplishment. Writing a book and maintaining a blog over the years make me feel accomplished too.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

A challenging component of being a business owner is that your job doesn’t end after an 8-hr day. Since you are wholly responsible for everything that happens, you work on holidays and nights if needed.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Believe in yourself: Self-belief is foundational for your entrepreneurial path. When you believe in yourself, you have utter confidence in yourself, in your ability to achieve, and the conviction that outcomes will be in your favor no matter what transpires.
  2. Be social and positive: When you are social, you continuously make connections, engage others, and build relationships. In order to grow your business persona, it is always desirable to attract others. People are attracted to a friendly, gregarious, and inviting disposition. Being positive and magnetic widens your reach and helps you grow.
  3. Be adaptable: Adaptability is the ability to adapt to change, be flexible, and switch directions whenever circumstances block your plans. It can be cultivated by becoming conscious of life’s impermanence, understanding that whatever problem or difficulty you encounter is temporary and will pass.
