Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in candle-making but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rejohan Perkins, founder of 8:Twenty8, located in Miami, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

8:Twenty8 is a luxury candle company. The name comes from the Bible verse Romans 8:28. It’s a reminder to everyone who even looks at a candle of ours that GOD will work out whatever you’re going through for good. I wanted my customers to always remember that no matter whatever they’re facing in life. Candles just went hand in hand with the name because candles really set that same peaceful mood.

Tell us about yourself

8:Twenty8 was birthed because of my love for candles, my love for creating peaceful spaces for the people around me, and because I was struggling mentally after losing my job back in 2019. Being a single mother at the time, just struggling with not knowing what was next was becoming overwhelming. Working on candles became so therapeutic for me. All of those things together helped me create this brand. I always say that I love setting the atmosphere wherever I am. It is so fulfilling to know that my candles can do that all over the world now. That motivates me because everyone goes through things, good and bad, but they all have one common goal, which is peace, especially in their homes and at work.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment in business is knowing my daughter is watching me run this business. She sees the good and the bad. The wins & the struggles. I love that she can witness how hard I work for this brand and how beneficial it has become for not only myself but for her too. Giving her the tools she needs to one day run her own empire or one day she can take over this brand she desires.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing as a business owner for me is perseverance. Just pushing through the tough times, bad investments, slow business days, and everything else that comes along with being a business owner. It's hard, but I already have to remember Romans 8:28 and why I started 8:Twenty8.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

For anyone looking to start a business, I would definitely tell them to start something they have a passion or desire for. That way, it'll never feel like "work." I would also tell them to do their research and take their time. There's no rush. Work at your own pace but ALWAYS give it you're all.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

8:Twenty8 hosts private and public candle classes and parties. That aspect of the brand has grown tremendously over the past year. Our classes have included anything from business empowerment panels, couples nights, and group therapy classes to mommy and me parties as well.

We also offer private label wholesales. We customize everything from your label down to the perfect candle scents perfect for you and your own brand.

In addition to our candles, we have custom Crystal hand-blown wine glasses. What goes better with candles than wine?
