Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Weilin Wu, Founder of 5W Coaching, located in Chicago, IL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

5W Coaching is a personal training and powerlifting coaching service for beginners, intermediates, and advanced trainees ready to take their physique and performance to the next level. Our mission is to inspire and empower people to achieve their ideal physical & mental physique through scientific research and by simplifying dieting, fitness, and nutrition.

Tell us about yourself

There's an old saying that the fastest way to master a skill is to share your knowledge with others. I have always been passionate about the fitness & wellness industry, and when the pandemic happened, I figured it was the best time for me to get certified in personal training as I was doing really well posting and sharing home workout videos online and training people virtually. After getting certified, I got a job at a commercial gym and eventually became a top 3 personal trainer in total session count across 100+ locations.

With the experience I have accumulated working with over 500+ different clients, I started 5W Coaching along with a few friends and started offering our services to people living outside of the South Side of Chicago. As a personal trainer and coach, it's gratifying when you see your client progress each day, each week, and each month. What motivates me is the opportunity to learn more and even provide more value to my clients each day so their fitness experience can be enhanced.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is providing hope and a blueprint to first-generation immigrants and college students. I have documented my fitness & business journey on social media, and that has inspired many people to start their own businesses and chase their passions. Inspiring and empowering others has always been a goal of mine, and I am glad I can wake up each morning leaving a positive impact on someone's else life.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is managing time that you're getting paid for and times that you're not. As a fitness trainer and coach, it's important to differentiate between providing your service versus giving out free advice. If you spend all your time offering free advice or providing free service, your business will not last very long.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a clear vision of what your business is providing and the audience that you're targeting.
  2. Always look to grow, whether it is growing your assets, your team, your knowledge in your industry, or finding ways to give your business a competitive advantage.
  3. Don't wait to get started and turn your dream into a reality.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

The path is entrepreneurship is not for everyone. Entrepreneurship is a 24/7 job, and if you're willing to dedicate your life to what you believe in, you're in the right place.
