What's your business, and who are your customers?
Author and Coach - the content focus is 48 Days to the Work You Love. I work with anyone feeling trapped in their current work. I believe everyone can find - or create - work that is meaningful, purposeful, and profitable.
Tell us about yourself
I was teaching a Sunday School class on career transitions. The class exploded with doctors, attorneys, dentists, pastors, engineers, and others who were looking for more meaning and fulfillment in their work - something beyond just money. People started asking for resources - so I wrote what I had, which grew into books, seminars, live events, online communities, and masterminds.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I listened to the Earl Nightingale recording of The Strangest Secret when I was a poor 13-yr-old farm kid. That gave me a mindset for thinking - that opened the door to opportunities I had dreamed of. A few years ago, Nightingale/Conant asked me to do a 6-hour audio program we titled Dream Job. That audio is now ranked #3 as their most impactful product - just one above The Strangest Secret. Being included in those 'masters of achievement' was a very special accomplishment for me.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Controlling time usage. My productivity increased dramatically when I learned the power of working in focused, uninterrupted blocks of time. I batch all meetings on Mondays, all client and team interaction on Tuesdays, am available for interviews on Wednesdays, and then devote Thursdays and Fridays to deep work - uninterrupted by any distractions. I end the week feeling energized and rested with all the important work completed.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Remember, it's never too late to have a new beginning.
- Surround yourself with people whose skills complement your own, allowing you to do what only you can do and thus operate in your Zone of Genius.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
You get paid for providing value to the world.
I milked cows and provided a product - paid little.
I painted houses and provided a service - paid more.
I inspire people and provide hope, inspiration, and encouragement - and the pay has increased dramatically.
