Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in candle-making but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Akilah Dodson, owner of 185 Candle, located in Las Vegas, NV, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I create luxury, non-toxic, wooden wick, vegan coconut wax. My customers are candle lovers. Those that love opulence and luxurious fragrances. I wanted candles that smell unique, that can relax your senses and leave you feeling amazing.

Tell us about yourself

My name is Akilah Dodson, and 185 Candle is my heart and soul projected into life (born into the light) when, as a world, we were being blanketed by darkness and a future of uncertainty. Like many of you, during this pandemic, I was at a standstill for the unforeseeable future.

My relationship with God has always been an essential partnership in my life. I was low, and I was scared, and I knew that my faith was going to see me through this, but first, I had to ask Him, “What do I do? If it’s your will, guide me.” Almost immediately, I had not just a visceral response to my question, but I had the answer. From sadness to joy, from despair to hope, I bring you 185 Candle.

I’m motivated to have my own business due to such uncertainty in the world. I want to be able to leave behind a legacy, provide for my family and make my own rules.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is following through on starting my business. Leaving no room for doubt. That was the hardest part for me without having guidance. I had to bet on myself when others doubted my ability to start my business. Always bet on yourself!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing that comes with being a business owner is wearing the many hats of your company. Engaging in Social Media is the hardest for me, personally. Content creation is one of the most important ways to grow your business; that’s the first thing people go to besides your website. It’s a work in progress for me.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know your why and what you’re offering your future customer.
  2. Budget for marketing.
  3. Take your time in research. Business is truly a marathon. Do not rush to start something you haven’t tested, done market research, surveys, or anything that will assist in achieving your success to the next level.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Have total faith in yourself. You are you, and do not compare yourself to anyone else in the same business as you. Your journey is unique! Not everyone will be on board with your vision; that’s just fine. Don’t take long to make important decisions. I believe that’s where self-doubt will try to sneak itself in. You know the answer; just do it. Your original ideas and logo will change, and change is essential for growth. Allow it to happen; it’s true for the betterment of your business!
